Dear Members and Friends ,

Welcome back. I suspect a rollercoaster ride awaits us in ‘18 on a number of fronts, domestic, EU/Brexit and geo-political. We will be addressing them all; and in that regard I recommend the first three months of our programme to you. It sees some top experts, commentators and politicians covering a great deal of the range of issues that will drive the UK and international operating environment for the membership. I’m delighted, in this first week, that we can also announce that we have added to two key senior appointments that will materially help our members with the insights, guidance and connections that they need.

We are delighted that Seumas Kerr had joined us as one of The D Group’s Development Directors and a member of the Strategy International Executive Committee. Many of you may know him from his active engagement with The D Group over the last 11 years as part of the Carillion Senior Management Team. He joined them as Managing Director of one of their joint venture companies and then became the Integrated Management Services and Compliance Director. Throughout this period, he was also the Group Military Advisor. Prior to joining Carillion he spent 12 months in Doha, Qatar as the Chief Operating Officer for a large Construction Project. In his first career he was in the British Army and retired as a Major General.

Seumas’ role within Strategy will be to utilise his considerable experience, across both the Infrastructure, Defence and Security Sectors to assist members in enhancing their positioning with key stakeholders. In addition, he will be able to assist members in identifying and creating strategies to enhance their private and public sector business. He will also join our roster of chairpersons of D Group Events and assist our senior team in expanding the reach of Strategy’s core D Group and BEI memberships.

Also recently appointed to the Strategy International Executive Committee is Derrick Sanyahumbi, who recently joined British Expertise International as Director, International Development. Derrick will look after members’ interests and manage a broad range of meetings and events covering the sector and our relationship with the UK Department for International Development (DFID).  His role will also support the HMG cross-department initiative and encompass those delivering UK development assistance, boosting exports and trade and delivering prosperity for the UK.

Derrick comes from a mixed professional background in both private sector and international development. He brings more than 15 years in the private sector with senior Marketing management experience and more than 10 years in international development with a wide range of organisations including; UN OCHA, International Finance Corporation (IFC), SNV and most recently Palladium. He has working experience in a wide range of countries in Africa and Asia, including; Zimbabwe, South Africa, Malawi, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Nepal.

Why the image of the Red Arrows? Apart from it being a suitable prompt as to how we can successfully address 2018 (preparation, precision, verve) it’s because next week, in this RAF 100 year, we have a major photographic exhibition at D Contemporary of Richard Deakin’s in-flight photography. The opening, generously supported by Lockheed Martin, is 6:30 pm on the 11th and we look forward to welcoming any of our members to join a range of top management and HMG from the defence and aerospace world.
