Dear Members and Friends,
A busy week on the events front.

Chairman of Sheffield LEP, Sir Nigel Knowles, supported by his team gave an impressive review of the Sheffield City Region’s competitive strengths and attractions. The SCR brochure says it all but, for the time-challenged, the mix of a central and visually stunning location with excellent communications and core strengths of leading universities, global excellence in nuclear engineering, healthcare, sports and rail all make up for a pretty attractive proposition for business. Strategy International and our associated research group, The British Foreign Policy Group will be spending an increasing amount of time exploring issues, business trends and opportunities in key UK regions outside the South East. There can be little doubt that they will (and should) be making their presence and needs felt in the dramatically changed UK political environment.

Yesterday we ran an Innovation Exchange workshop on Kazakhstan in partnership with British Water. The round table focussed on a number of case studies within the Kazakh water & wastewater market. Ainur Karbozova, Counsellor Investment, Technologies and Trade at the Embassy of Kazakhstan, then gave an overview of the political and economic situation in country, as related to the sector.
D Contemporary launched two artists David Agenjo and Chibuike Uzoma.  It’s good to see that Strategy members are increasingly aware that there is a pretty vibrant art scene here which they, their staff and clients can enjoy.

We promised an overview of the Departments of State, which (other than the ever-present HM Treasury) tend to be the most relevant to our collective membership. Please click here to see a summary of the relevant ministers, top civil servants and SpAds in BEIS, DIT, FCO, DFID, MOD. With pretty well all positions filled there will be a move to get a number of stalled programmes back on track, most notably for our members, the long-awaited ‘new’ Prosperity programme, with some tenders already appearing. We are in the thick of them!

Finally (and seamlessly), in relation to the UK’s commitment to assisting with international trade and capacity building, we are delighted to report that our own Nigel Peters was awarded an OBE in Her Majesty’s Birthday Honours List for services to UK export promotion in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Our congratulations.

With best regards,
