Speaker: Lord Hutton, Chairman, Nuclear Industry Association
Amongst the various challenges for the UK energy and climate change policy, the government has advised there are acute and urgent skills shortages in key industrial sectors, including the nuclear industry. The role of nuclear energy is essential to the UK's low-carbon, industrial strategy and an effective policy could help the UK supply chain maximise its contribution to the low-carbon agenda, both at home and overseas.
The Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) is the trade association and information and representative body for the civil nuclear industry in the UK. At the Government’s request the NIA is in the process of putting together specific proposals for a sector agreement between the Government and the UK nuclear industry. This project is being led by Lord Hutton (NIA Chairman), with the support of the reconstituted Nuclear Industry Council, and will be the subject of further discussion with Government during the course of the year.
Lord Hutton was appointed Chair of the Nuclear Industry Council in 2013, following a successful 18-year career as the Labour Member of Parliament for Barrow and Furness. During this time, he held a number of ministerial positions including as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions from 2005-07, Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform from 2007-08, and Secretary of State for Defence from 2008-09.
