Speaker: Penny Mordaunt MP, Minister of State for Disabled People, Health & Work, Department for Work & Pensions
The Department for Work and Pensions has an objective of ‘improving the rights and opportunities for disabled people in a fair and inclusive society’, but predicts that the proportion of GDP to be spent on achieving this aim will decrease to just 2.2% in 2019/20. There are over 12 million disabled people in the UK who make up around one third of NHS users in Britain.
53% of working-age adults with impairments experienced barriers to work compared with 30% of adults without impairments - the 2 most common barriers to work among adults with impairments are a lack of job opportunities and difficulty with transport.
It is imperative, therefore, that employers, disabled people and organisations work together so that disabled people can find jobs that are right for them and that these are suitably flexible to their needs. This lunch will be incredibly helpful to discover the Government positioning on, and help and support available to, this ever-growing challenge.
