Speaker: Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen John Hillier, KCB, CBE, DFC, Chief of the Air Staff
Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier became head of the RAF in July last year; selected, as the MoD said, for his skills in 'leadership and experience in delivering complex programmes across defence'. Previously he was Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff, in charge of military capability at the Ministry of Defence. He has brought to these roles extensive and highly distinguished operational experience: he flew 16 combat missions over Iraq as part of Operation Desert Storm in 1991, and was awarded the DFC in 1999 after serving in the First Gulf War and the US Bronze Star Medal during the Iraq War in 2003. He was appointed Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath in December, 2013.
As economic pressures bring ever tighter constraints to military budgets the importance of constructive and productive relationships between the Armed Forces and industry is all the more apparent. Support for Reservists and the Armed Forces Covenant are important aspects of this while a mutually beneficial approach to procurement projects is vital.
We much look forward to hearing Sir Stephen's views and this event will be a must for all those involved in the defence sector.
