Speaker: Jon Thompson, CEO and Permanent Secretary, HMRC
HMRC’s objectives are ambitious and all embracing, being to maximise revenues and bear down on avoidance and evasion; to transform tax and payments systems; and to design and deliver a professional, efficient and engaged organisation. The ten year modernisation programme, now over half way through, includes investment in new online services, analytics and skills, and the establishment of 13 regional centres. And HMRC plans to move almost entirely from paper to digital over the next few years.
As Chief Executive and Permanent Secretary of HMRC, Jon Thompson is responsible for delivering the department’s strategy, business objectives and customer service improvements. He took on this role in April 2016 after serving as Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Defence and among his many previous senior functions he was Head of the Government Finance profession at HM Treasury. Jon has quite a programme to push forward, and all of it is of considerable relevance and interest to businesses – whether as taxpayers, or as contractors, advisers and suppliers to HMRC.
