Jeremy Long, CEO-European Business, MTR Corporation Limited discusses, 'Crossrail Delivery: The MTR Model'.
When Crossrail – Europe’s largest infrastructure project – is at last fully commissioned in 2018, it may seem unlikely that the majority of its estimated 200 million passengers per annum will know who operates it, or indeed that it is the same organisation that already runs London Overground.
This is of course MTR (Crossrail), the wholly owned subsidiary of MTR Hong Kong, who won the contract from TfL in 2014. They will be bringing with them a wide range of highly successful experience in the operation of large complex public transport systems. Besides running the Hong Kong metro and other services in that city, MTR runs rail systems in cities including Beijing, Melbourne and Stockholm. They also offer worldwide railway consultancy and contracting services to clients across the globe including China, India, Australia, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
Some factors in London may be similar but many will be different to those in Hong Kong, where the metro is famously profitable, efficient and punctual; can MTR repeat the trick with Crossrail? Where does the future lie?
We look forward to discussing the issues with Jeremy Long, who has been CEO for MTR's European business since 2004. Jeremy was formerly Managing Director of FirstGroup Rail Division, and was founder and Chief Executive of GB Railways Group plc, an award-winning passenger franchise, open access, and rail-freight operator.
