We welcome Dr Karin von Hippel, Director-General, RUSI, who will discuss the 'Evolving Terrorist Threat'.
The massacre in Orlando is only too fresh in our minds as we write this note. The principal motivation of the perpetrator is unclear, but following other atrocities such as those at San Bernadino and at Sousse, Tunisia, this seems the latest in a succession of manifestations of the most apparent evolution of the terrorist threat: namely the growing role of lone-actor terrorists, bringing new and acute problems to security and law enforcement authorities and a new degree of threat to us all. The Royal United Services Institute, of which Dr Karin von Hippel became Director General last November, published their final report in a series on Countering Lone-Actor Terrorism this April. More strategically there will no doubt be further developments before we welcome Dr von Hippel.
Before joining RUSI Dr von Hippel served as Chief of Staff to General John Allen, Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter-ISIL, and worked in senior roles in the Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations and in the Bureau of Counterterrorism at the US Department of State. Prior to that, she worked at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC and at the Centre for Defence Studies at King’s College London. She has also worked for the United Nations and the European Union in Somalia and Kosovo.
We very much look forward to what will be an authoritative and insightful session on this deeply concerning issue.
